Found some photos of The Shape of Things, the first major project I directed for SpeakEasy Stage. The set designer, Paul Theriault, sent me an e-mail yesterday. He is a talented visual artist, and he and his wife are looking to move into a live in studio complex. He asked if I had any photos of his set that he could use to beef up his portfolio. Paul is a very talented visual artist as well as a scenic designer. The bits of the painted floor treatment you see were based directly on one of his canvases.
Paul and I are sitting in his old studio/living room, having our first design meeting. Conversation went something like this:
PM: What should we do about the floor?
PT: I was thinking a paint treatment simulating real floor material, something neutral that could work with all the locations, like a tile or stone.
PM: How about that? (points to large abstract painting on the wall, gorgeus and abstract, dripping with primary color and bold black line)
Thank god we didn't meet at a Starbuck's.
These photos were taken to give to the press to run alongside articles or reviews of the play. As such, there's no shots of the entire stage. Due to space issues, papers need to crop photos close, and they are always looking for a face or faces, especially with a sense of action or drama.
I think I have a few photos of the entire set somewhere, I'll have to dig through the photo box today and upload any additional ones that I find.
Anyway, you can view the gallery here.
Hey Paul, I randomly stumbled upon your site and everything looks great. I have a multimedia project that I'm doing that I'd like to discuss with you. Give me a shout back at george@hookerstreetband.com
