So I'm trying to find a banner image for this page. Trouble is, what is a visual image that fits the thing that I do? Take a picture of a play and what you are looking at is photography, not theatre. Same with film, video, or sound recording of a play. The two masks, comedy and tragedy, are the best things I can think of as an iconic representation of the art form, but they are just so hokey. Other commonly used images that come to mind: the beam of a spotlight, a performer on an empty stage (problem: not a good icon because it becomes specific, not general: this light on this performer on that stage), tools or sets or clothes, the things used to change theatrical space, but then you're just showing objects or architecture. Something about written text might be interesting, or at least removed enough to be interesting. A photo of text from a playscript is merely a snapshot of an outline for what will or has become the real thing, so at least it is twice removed, twice as abstract.
I'll start a contest. Comment on this post, tell me what you think would work best as a visual iconic representation of theatre art, and if I like it, I'll use it here.
Until then I think I'll try and find a picture of coffee beans. I like coffee. Goes well with the brown/khaki color scheme here.
